History;
The first International Art Biennale  was inaugurated in the gardens of the Castle zone, on April 1895.At the eveniment are present King Umberto I and Queen Margherita.
To the first show we see the international participation of Belgium, Austro-Hungary, Denmark, France, Germany, England, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden.
In the first editions of the Biennale, all the works were collected in the “Palace of the exposure”, which at the beginning was called “Pro Arte” with the classical facade designed by painters Marius de Maria, and Bartolomeo Bezzi. That was called latter “Italian” pavilion and underwent expansions and modifications over time, mainly in its facade.

Then other foreign countries began to build their own pavilion .The first was Belgian (1907),then Hungary, Germany, England (1909) France (1912), Russia (1914).
The pavilion of Venice – 1932 was designed by the architect Brenno del Giudice, intended to receive decorative Venetian art in particular glass and lace.
During the years 1970 the Biennale  “comes out of the fence of the gardens ” to identify new exhibition spaces in the entire city. For this reason has been restored and equipped the new buildings of the Arsenale – (the Corderie 1980).

In 1930 the Biennale  organized the first festival of contemporary music; in 1932 the first international exhibition of film art, one of the most important exhibitions of the sector; 1930, the first festival of the theater , 1980 first international exhibition of architecture and 1990, the first festival of dance.

From 1910 begin to be presented solo exhibitions of great international artists such as Gustav Klimt (purchased for the museum Ca Pesaro), Pierre Auguste Renoir, Gustave Colbert; and exhibitions dedicated to impressionist artists as: Paul Cesano (1929), Vincent Van Gogh (1920 ), Amedeo Modigliani (1922), Edgar Degas (1924), August Renoir (1938), Franz Marc (1928),Paul Gauguin (1920), Monet (1932).

After the war, the Biennale  receive a real update on contemporary artistic movements with exhibitions dedicated to impressionism in 1948, Movement Fauves- 1950; the Cubists in 1950, the historic 1950 ,Futurism and Expressionism 1952 ,Contemporary sculpture in 1952, Surrealism, Abstract Art 1954 ,American Painting 1956. In these years are formed artistic currents and Italian painters who will have a great significance in the national art scene.

In the 1960 the Biennale  continues the upgrade policy by promoting new artistic trends with the American Pop Art movement which has a great success. Follow  the artistic currents: Land Art, The Art Povera, Body art happenings, Video Art, Photography.

During the years eighties and nineties, the Biennale pass times of “crisis and success”,looking for a new identity.

On January 23, 1998 was approved the legislative decree with which the Biennale has become legal personality under private law and took the name of “Cultural Society” La Biennale di Venezia (Biennale of Venice).

The spaces of the Arsenale dedicated to the Biennale are expanded, including the Corderie and Artillery buildings, some old textile factory .

-2001 -Shakespeare & Shakespeare, an interdisciplinary project that involves all sectors of the  Biennale of Venice in a joint tribute to the work of Shakespeare.

-2002 Temps d’images, dedicated to the relationship between live performance, new forms of creativity and media television and film; The festival also takes place in Brussels and Paris.

From June 15 to November 2, 2003, the festival shows an record of 260,000 visitors;

On 15 January 2004 is published in the Official Gazette the decree of reorganization of the Biennale, which is transformed in Foundation.

The tittle of the Biennale of Venice in 2013 “The signs of a revolution” is immediately
clear: give a value to the image. The specific pass for multiple entries with different
cumulative formulas, allow to combine the visit of the pavilions also with the 57th International Festival of Contemporary Music,of the 42nd International Theater Festival
and the 70th Venice International Film Festival (August 28-September 7, 2013).

The 55 th edition of the Venice Biennale of Venice, was the biggest stage in the world of international art, and closes with over 475,000 visitors.

The 14 th edition of the International Architecture Exhibition of the Biennale of Venice 2014,
“turn back to the ancient and experience the future.”
From June 3 to 23 November 2014, to coincide with the Biennale of Architecture, the work of the German artist Heinz Mack will remain on display in the square of the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. There are more than 850,000 gold mosaic tiles produced by the Vicenza Trend to cover 9 soaring columns, towering over 7 meters, the installation of the German artist Heinz Mack.
